BSc (Hons) Business Economics

The study of economics is central to understanding many aspects of commercial and organisational activity. BSc (Hons) Business Economics will provide you with a firm grounding in the underlying theories and analysis of micro and macro behaviour, empowering you with the knowledge and skills to apply this to real-world policy.   • Year 1
  • In your first year, you’ll explore the world of economics and learn how to interpret economic data. You’ll build up a range of principles and theories and develop quantitative methods and study skills that will provide a firm foundation for further studies. You’ll combine your economics study with organisational behaviour and accounting and have the opportunity to add another subject to your studies - a European language or a business and social science subject.

    • ECN109 Interpreting Economic Data

      This module considers basic conceptual and practical issues related to the interpretation of economic data. It introduces students to a range of methods for the collection, presentation, and analysis of economic data, and applies those methods to the analysis of real-world issues.

    • PDP100 Personal Development

      This module is concerned with the development of key business and learning skills to assist your transition to a business programme at higher education level. The module will also introduce you to some key global, ethical and organisational responsibility issues and begin to prepare you for the world of work. There will be an opportunity to engage with organisations/ enterprise. The module will be delivered via your personal tutors.

    • ABF103 Principles of Accounting

      This module provides an introduction to accounting for students, who mainly intend to specialise in this area. The module largely deals with the preparation of the main financial statements and their interpretation.

    • ECN118 Principles of Macroeconomics

      This module develops concepts and theories of macroeconomic analysis at an introductory level. It applies them to the analysis of real world issues of macroeconomic stability, growth and policy.

      This module provides an introduction to the theories and concepts of modern microeconomics, and applies them to a range of contemporary issues.

  • In your second year, you’ll build on the core syllabus of the first year, and develop your knowledge of theories and methods that are central to modern economic analysis. You’ll study micro and macro economics in depth and improve your quantitative skills with econometrics which, will help enhance your career prospects. You’ll also the opportunity to learn about the economics of business organisations and have a choice of taking further economic or business options.

  • Get paid for hands-on work experience and develop your economic flair during our optional industrial placement. We'll support you to find the most suitable private or public sector placement. With the guidance of your host organisation, plus support from academic staff on your course, this provides an extremely valuable opportunity to apply and deepen your knowledge and to develop a range of skills that will be invaluable to your future career.

      The placement year consists of an extended period of appropriate professional experience in a business or organisation. It allows the student to gain relevant experience to consolidate their studies and prepare for final stage study and employment after graduation. Students on BA International Business may also undertake a study placement at an approved partner institution.

    • EPIE301 The Placement Project

      This module requires students to produce a project relating to their placement experience.

  • Final year
  • In your final year, you’ll learn more about the global economy and specialise in business topics of your choice, including economic modelling and game theory. Choose to study from a number of topics including environmental and resource economics, economics of renewable energies in the UK and issues relating to environmental and economic sustainability. You’ll also research a dedicated honours project on a subject of your choice.
