  • Year 1
  • In your first year, we’ll introduce you to how events fit into the exciting world of arts, entertainment and the media. You’ll discover the principles of design and learn what it takes to manage conferences and events. To round off the year, you’ll explore entrepreneurialism and potential careers in the events sector. Plus you’ll have the chance to study hospitality for events, or a language.

  • This year you’ll develop your knowledge and skills by studying a range of core modules, getting hands-on experience managing and promoting specific events. You’ll investigate research methods, giving you the skills required to engage in both academic and business research – invaluable for placements or careers that involve market research. You’ll also have the chance to study optional modules, including festivals and event tourism or a language.

      The Career Investment Programme is a development scheme designed to enhance students' employability prospects. It provides them with information on the placement year, and equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary for applying for placement positions. The module also includes a number of workshops and events designed to develop students' skills and knowledge, with the purpose of enhancing their employability.

    • HTM240 Crowd Behaviour & Managing Safety

      To advance understanding of audience behaviour in the context of crowds. To develop the ability to plan for and manage crowd safety at events. To receive accredited training on legislation, safety and risk planning, and managing crowd safety on-site.

    • HTM219 Events Planning and Strategy

      This module outlines the skills, attributes, processes and resources required to run conferences and events. It provides an overview of the event planning sequence including the setting of objectives, budget setting, organising and marketing the event.

    • HTM226 Promoting Events

      This module is designed to introduce the theories, concepts and skills required by event managers when they have to promote an event. It covers two related themes: marketing and public relations. The role marketing and public relations can play in staging a successful event will be evaluated and assessed.

    • HTM238 Tourism, Hospitality and Events Research Methods

      This module investigates the potential contributions of different disciplines and approaches that help to explain the nature of tourism, hospitality and events management. The module examines the research methods used in investigations that focus on tourism, hospitality and events management as applied academic subjects.

      To examine the importance of festivals and event tourism in relation to a tourist destination's policy and planning strategies. This will determine the value of events to the tourism industry.   • This year you’ll get the opportunity to undertake a paid industry placement. You’ll spend 48 weeks working with an organisation in the UK or abroad, across a wide range of sectors. You’ll apply the skills and knowledge you’ve gained over the past two years in the real world. You’ll immerse yourself in a professional environment enabling you to make a range of contacts – all invaluable when it comes to securing a job. Complete your placement and you’ll earn a Certificate of Industrial Experience.

      The placement year consists of an extended period of professional work experience in a relevant business organisation. It extends the student's commercial awareness and knowledge of the business environment, provides an opportunity for personal development, and equips them with the experience and skills necessary to gain suitable employment on graduation.

  • Final year
  • In your final year you’ll undertake the honours project, which allows you to pursue a specific interest that you’re passionate about, through a significant research-based exercise. You’ll gain a strategic understanding of the industry and its future perspectives, by engaging with event issues, such as crisis and disaster management. You can also choose to study a range of other subjects like leadership, event innovation, event consultancy and a language option.

A level/AS level: 280 points (including a minimum of 140 points from two A levels). 14-19 Diplomas are accepted. Other combinations and non-A level qualifications also considered.​

Dr Nigel Jackson

Dr Nigel Jackson has extensive experience in marketing and public relations within the commercial, agency and not-for-profit sectors, and is the author of 'Promoting and Marketing Events: theory and practice' (2013).

Nigel’s research interests include communication, marketing, public relations and the application of persuasion.
